Introduction to CranioSacral Therapy
The worrisome side effects and soaring costs of medications and invasive surgery have people increasingly turning to CranioSacral Therapy as an effective, drug-free and pain-free therapy. CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach of evaluating and energizing the function of the craniosacral system -the tissues and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. CranioSacral Therapy enhances the body’s innate ability to heal itself with excellent results for a wide variety of medical conditions including anxiety, sciatica, migraines, TMJ , chronic neck and back pain, to fibromyalgia, ADD/ADHD, post surgical scarring and much more.
CranioSacral Therapy and Pain Relief
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.
Few body structures have more influence on your health and well-being than your central nervous system . And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system- the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord.
Every day you endure stresses and strains and your body absorbs them. Your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and affect the brain and spinal cord.
Unfortunately, this can compromise the central nervous system- and the performance of nearly other system in the body.
CranioSacral Therapy releases those tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. Using a non-invasive light touch, we evaluate your internal environment, then use techniques to release restrictions we find by freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best. CranioSacral therapy naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens resistence to disease, and enhances your health and wellbeing. And because it’s so gentle , CranioSacral Therapy can be efffective for all ages, from newborns to elders.
History of CranioSacral Treatment
In the early part of the twentieth century, osteopathic physician William Sutherland devised the original concepts for the craniosacral system. His studies culminated in a system of treatment called Cranial Osteopathy.
John Upledger is another osteopath who developed CranioSacral Therapy. While assisting during a surgery in 1970, he observed a rhythmic movement of the dura mater, the membrane that encloses the brain and spinal cord. This discovery wasn’t in medical texts, nor could his colleagues explain this phenomenon. Dr. Upledger’s quest led him to the work of Dr. Sutherland’s , and to develop his own scientific research to confirm the existence of the craniosacral system.
While serving as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics at Michigan State University from 1975-1983, he worked with a dedicated team of anatomists, biophysicists, physiologists and bioengineers to establish a scientific basis for the craniosacral system.
His work continued in the development of CranioSacral Therapy(CST). He formed The Upledger Institute in Florida in 1985 to continue the work and educate the public and healthcare professionals about the benefits of CST. The Upledger Institute has trained over 80,000 practitioners in CST including: medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, nurses, acupuncturists, and others.
CST is a cutting edge therapy with a ‘less is more’ philosophy ; using a gentle touch by a skilled therapist to activate the body to self-correct its restrictions. By listening to the body and following its lead, the CST practitioner often can uncover a source of pain or dysfunction that can be missed by traditional medicine and that can open a path to wellness. CST is useful as both a primary treatment method and combined with other traditional or complementary techniques.

Introduction to Visceral Manipulation
The visceral system is about the interconnected synchronicity and harmonious relationships between the motions of the organs and the structures of the body, thus having a stabilizing effect. When there is harmony, the organs function at their optimal level; their motions such as the beating of the heart, the inhalation/exhalation of the lungs, gives us life. Motion is life.
When one organ can’t move in harmony with its viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions, or displacement, it creates problems for the body’s other organs and musculoskeletal structures. Everything is connected.
The disharmony causes fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body is forced to move around, causing inflammation and irritation. Chronic irritation sets the stage for disease and dysfunction.
Visceral Manipulation is a form of manual therapy that focuses on the internal organs, their environment, and their potential influence on many structural and physiological disorders.
Visceral Manipulation is used to locate and solve problems throughout the body. It acts as a catalyst to improve the functioning of the organs, disperse the negative effects of stress, and enhance movement of the musculoskletal system through the connective tissue attachments.
This anatomically specific hands-on therapy is very gentle due to the delicate and highly reactive nature of the visceral tissues. Gentle force precisely directed reaps the greatest results.
These gentle manipulations improve the individual organs, the systems that they function within, and the structural integrity of the entire body. Free movement and motion is the goal of this 21st Century manual therapy.
The body is affected deeply, and treatments can last for 2-3 weeks afterwards, as the body is processing the new information and reorganizing itself to a healthier state of being.
